How Often Should I Get a Massage?

One question Massage Therapists frequently receive is the age old question “how often should I get a massage?” The answer to this depends on the type of person you are in relation to the amount activity you put your body through.

Maintenance Massage

For individuals looking to maintain their bodies outside of the gym, one to two a month should be sufficient. This allows you to gain all the benefits of massage every time without beating up your body too much.

Massage for Pain Managment

If you are going to use massage as a pain management the frequency is going to depend on the severity of your condition. Your therapist should give you recommendations on your specific condition. If you could receive massage one to two times a week for the first two weeks, this would be a good start. Now where individuals lack the most benefit is by not doing any exercises to correct posture immediately after massage. The reason for this is you now have an opportunity to workout in a new range of motion with less pain to begin correcting posture quicker.

Sports Massage for the Athletic

Athletes and all active individuals should incorporate massage into their training regiment to keep the body in motion. For very active individuals the recommended amount would be once a week on an off day. Moderate athletes two to three massages per month. Active individuals in noncompetition mode one to two times a month or when needed.

If you can’t swing the payment with repeated massages, learn how to do self-massage with a foam roller and a lacrosse ball. Our Ground Zero program can teach you how to do this Included in the program are bodyweight strength exercises and targeted stretches. This is ideal to create that strong, flexible body.
